Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
